Coastwalk is proud to offer this one-of-a-kind trip on the Southern California coast, designed for enthusiastic hikers who enjoy long-distance hiking and staying at a resort-style base camp. The host location, the private Malibu Nature Preserve is tucked away on the coast in the most remote part of western Malibu on the Los Angeles-Ventura counties border.  The area boasts a warm Mediterranean climate and possesses rugged mountains with great coastal views.  We are the ONLY group to have ever had the privilege of camping at the Malibu Nature Preserve.  There is plenty of room to pitch your tent or park your R/V – the choice is yours.  (Parking only – no hook-ups available).

The hikes planned are of moderate-plus difficulty and 6-10 miles in length; fit hikers will be challenged, but all will enjoy the riparian canyons, rugged peaks, and exceptional geologic formations.  We can expect breath-taking coastal views, flowers along the trail, and an occasional native-American artifact.  We’ll explore trails on the Preserve’s grounds and nearby segments of the Coastal Trail and the Santa Monica Mountains Backbone Trail.  In addition, we’ll have an early morning low- tide hike along the beach and through sea caves.  We promise a memorable experience.

Dinners will be provided in the great Coastwalk tradition by skilled volunteer cooks.  In the evenings, we will meet in the clubhouse (the Preserve was formerly the Malibu Riding and Tennis Club) for talks on hiking and wilderness-camping subjects such as navigation with GPS and first aid, or to informally exchange stories campfire style.  In addition, there will be free time after the day’s hikes for those who wish to swim in the Preserve’s beautiful pool or at the beach, or perhaps play tennis.  There will be time to relax and take in the views,or just stroll with camera in hand.

Housing options:  Bring your tent as on any Coastwalk; bring an RV or camper vehicle – let us know in advance to reserve your spot and tell us the size of your equipment – there is an area separate from the tents (without hookups); rent a tent: the Nature Preserve can provide you with a private room in an already set-up 2-room house tent and a camp mattress for $60 – reserve ahead and receive payment instructions.

Maximum enrollment is 30.
