Coastwalk is the only group running a guided trip along California’s Lost Coast in 2012. California’s remote  Lost Coast (Humboldt/Mendocino Counties) is said to be the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the continental U.S. Three tectonic plates interact here, producing cliffs of contorted rock strata and steep mountains, complemented by miles of black sand and boulder beaches, lush vegetation, and abundant animal life.

On the first four days, from the Mattole River to Shelter Cove, we hike on narrow beaches and raised terraces along the ocean at the base of the steep King Range. The next four days, we take on steep ridges above the ocean: Chemise Mountain and into the Sinkyone Wilderness, up ridges and down to redwoods and creeks for camping.

This is a challenging backpack. Hikers carry all their gear. Coastwalk provides dinner on the first and fifth evenings, and daily hot beverages. Except for these dinners,  hikers provide their own food and prepare their own meals. At the mid-point, we will pick up a second bag of food and clean clothes. Daily mileage appears modest, but strenous sand walking and steep elevation gains and losses with a full pack demand that you be in good hiking condition. Please contact  Coastwalk to discuss your abilities.

Transportation between a central parking area and distant trailheads is provided; this is the key to being able to hike the entire trail. Join us on this exciting and beautiful expedition, letting Coastwalk take care of the planning. Full 8 day hikers have registration priority, but after April 15 contact the Coastwalk office for space availability on either of the 4 day segments. Maximum enrollment is 12.
