Our Coastwalkers will begin the six day outing by camping and rambling among the lush flowers, ferns, and shrubs of a magical rain forest. Towering overhead, hikers will behold the tallest trees on the planet, the Sequoia Semperviren. These “super trees” and the area of our Coastwalk were featured in the stunning October 2009 National Geographic article, THE TALLEST TREES.

The daily hikes are taken at a enjoyable pace to allow participants to appreciate the beauty and diversity of our coastline. We will hike and explore six to eight miles per day. The total walk is around 30 to 35 miles. Elevation gains are typical of public nature trails with numerous gee wiz resting points.

Hikers will sleep out in the wild in sleeping bags and tents. However, all that is required on the trail is a light day pack as the hiker’s gear will be shuttled from camp to camp. Hikers will be guided along enormous sand spits that enclose and separate large bodies of water from the Pacific Ocean. These unique formations are referred to as lagoons. Four lagoons will be seen during our hike.Coast trekkers will encounter an exciting contrast in beaches. Tortured granitic and basaltic rock form numerous tide pools for curious naturalists. Placid, moist sand and gravel beaches will give rock hounds a chance to collect the elusive agate.

Whale spouts will be seen along the way, confirming a northern migration to Arctic feeding grounds. Native Americans once led a flourishing existence along our trail. Going back in time, tribes harvested elk, deer, salmon, steelhead trout, and shellfish here. Nearing the end of our COASTWALK, we may have an exciting opportunity to witness a ceremonial Yurok Brush Dance, referred to as the “healing dance”.
