For Coastal Cleanup DayWhy Are Beach Cleanups Important?
California’s coast and waterways have historically been collecting spots for annual accumulations of trash and debris. This debris, if not removed, can be fatal to all manner of marine wildlife, damages our State’s economy, and can even become a human health hazard. Coastal Cleanup Day is fun! It is a great way for families, students, service groups and neighbors, to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources and impact future public policy to protect our coastline and environment.
What To Expect As A Volunteer
PRIOR TO COASTAL CLEANUP DAY
- Fill out the Volunteer Signup Form online. In this form, you will choose the beach you would like to volunteer at and fill out the necessary information. By filling out this form, you provide us a means of contacting you, so that we can relay important information to you regarding Coastal Cleanup Day.
- If possible, please bring your own cleanup supplies! We recommend you bring a bag or bucket, some gloves (preferably reusable sturdy ones) and a trash grabber.
- Bring water and snacks! We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to keep plastic waste down. Your Site Captain will have water to refill your bottle. Keep yourself fueled. Our Site Captains will have a few snacks available at the event, like granola bars.
- Bring sun and wind protection – hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a wind breaker or jacket.
- Wear close-toed shoes.
- On the day of the event, September 21, you will go to your designated meeting location and meet your Site Captain. They will have you fill out a waiver, go over some safety information, give you supplies (if needed) and explain how to fill out your Data Collection cards.
- Do not begin cleanup until you have checked in with your captain! Please do not leave until you have checked in with your captain.
- At the end of the event, send any photos you have to [email protected] or tag Coastwalk on Facebook or Instagram in your posts.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS
